스티브 잡스의 연설을 통해 다시 한번 감동과 감명을 받다.

자서전.
모든 자서전엔 가난을 딛고
일어선 이야기가 나온다.
당신이 지금 세상에서 가장 가난한 사람이라면
세상에서 가장 감동적이 자서전을 준비하고 있는 것이다.

이 짧은 문장은 저에게 깊은 감흥을 주었습니다.
현재 뚜렷한 나만의 특징을 가지고 있지 않은 저에게는 위로의 말과 좀 더 열정적으로 살자라는 결심을 하게 만드는 문장이었습니다.

이러한 문장과 관련하여 또 한명의 사람을 소개해드릴까 합니다.
바로 애플의 CEO 스티브잡스입니다.

최근에, 다시 스티브 잡스의 연설이 담긴 동영상을 보았습니다.
여러분께서도 아시다시피 2005년 스텐포드 대학 때 졸업 연사 연설이었죠.

특히 스티브 잡스는 미혼모인 생모에게서 버림을 받고 입양이 되는 불운한 사람으로 태어났습니다. 하지만, 스티브 잡스는 이러한 불운을 기회로 만들 줄 아는 천재였습니다. 

리드 칼리지를 그만두며, 자신이 흥미있던 캘리그래피 강좌를 청강하였고, 이를 통해 20세에 애플이라는 회사를 창업을 하였고, 맥이라는 퍼스널 컴퓨터를 만들었습니다.

그리고 30세가 되던 해에 자신이 만든 회사로부터 해고를 당했습니다.
하지만, 5년 후에 NeXT와 Pixar라는 회사를 만들어 큰 성공을 거두었고, 애플이 NeXT를 인수하는 바람에 스티브 잡스는 다시 애플의 CEO가 될 수 있었습니다.

하지만, 머지않아 췌장암 말기까지 걸리는 시련을 겪었지만, 하늘에서 스티브 잡스를 도우셨는지, 희귀성 췌장암이라 치료를 할 수 있게 되어 지금의 스티브 잡스가 되었습니다. 그리고 2005년 스텐포드 대학에서 이런 말씀을 합니다.

Stay hungry, Stay Fooligh....

이 말씀은 정말로 전 세계 꿈을 잃지 않고 열심히 살아가는 사람들에게 큰 영감을 주었던 말입니다.  심지어 제 대학 후배 녀석도 자기를 소개하는 문구에 이 말을 대표적으로 쓸 정도니까요.

하지만, 이 말씀 외에도 정말 주옥같은 말씀들이 많습니다. 
오늘은 여러분께 스티브 잡스가 말한 연설 중 저에게 있어 주옥같은 말씀들을 소개해드리겠습니다. 

First Story
You can't connect the dots looking forward. You can only cnnect them looking backwards, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connet in your future.  You have to trust in something-your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever-because beliving that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the diffrence.

Second Story
I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if hadn't been fired from Apple.  It was awful-tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Some times life's going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love, and that is as true for work as it is for your lovers.  Your work is going to fill a large part of your life.  And the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you belive is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do.  If you haven't found it yet, keep looking, and don't settle.  As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.  And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.  So keep looking. Don't settle.

Third Story
I lived with that diagnosis all day.  Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas, and got a few cells from the tumor.  I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope, the doctor started crying becuase it tured out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.  I had the surgery, and, thankfully, I am fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a more decades.  Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept.

No one wants to die.  Even people who want to go to Heaven don't want to die to get there.  And yet Death is the destination we all share.  No one has ever escaped it.  And that is as it should be because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.  It's Life's change agent.  It clears out the old to make way forz the new.  Right now, the new is you.  But someday, not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.  Sorry to be so dramatic, but it's quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.  Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people's thinking.  Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.  And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  Everything else is secondary.

첫 번째 이야기에서는 자신만의 언어로 하나씩 이뤄나가다 보면 이러한 점들이 어떻게든 미래의 점들로 이어질 것이라는 확신을 가지라는 말씀이었구요.

두 번째 이야기에서는 언제나 자신이 대단하다고 생각하며 좋아하는 일을 찾고, 현재에 안주하지 말고 밝은 미래로 나아가라는 말씀이었습니다.

끝으로 세 번째 이야기는 개인적으로 제일 감명 깊었던 부분이었는데요. 스티브 잡스의 죽음 가까이 갔던 경험을 토대로 죽음이 지나면 새로움이 나온다. 그것이 바로 여러분이다. 그러므로 새로움인 여러분들 마음과 직관을 따르는 용기를 가져라. 시간은 유한하지 않으므로 남의 인생이 아닌 여러분의 인생을 살라 라는 말씀이었습니다.


요즘, 이렇게 블랙박스라는 도서와 함께, 스티브 잡스의 연설을 통해 힘을 얻고 있답니다.  어쩌면, 스티브 잡스에게 이러한 인생 역경이 없었다면, 지금의 스티브 잡스가 아니었을지 모르겠습니다. 이렇듯, 진정으로 성공하는 사람은 계속 잘 되는 사람이 아니라, 위기를 기회로 만드는 사람이라는 생각이 듭니다. ^^

그리고 현재 저에게 주어진 이러한 난관들도 앞으로의 더 발전된 제가 되기 위해 주어진 기회인지도 모르겠습니다.
